Upselling encourages existing customers to move to a higher-tier plan or add more seats. Cross-selling promotes additional products or features that complement their current purchase. Both strategies grow revenue from existing customers without acquisition costs.

Example: Upsell - suggesting a customer on the Starter plan upgrade to Pro for advanced analytics. Cross-sell - offering a customer who uses billing software to also adopt the tax automation module.
