What is a SaaS financial model ?

A SaaS financial model is a structured spreadsheet or software model that projects a subscription business's revenue, expenses, and key metrics over time.

A SaaS financial model typically projects MRR growth by cohort, churn and expansion rates, COGS, operating expenses, and resulting metrics such as gross margin, ARR, and burn rate. It is used for internal planning, board reporting, and investor due diligence.

Example: A SaaS startup builds a 3-year financial model projecting growth from $500,000 ARR to $5M ARR, assuming a 3% monthly churn rate, 15% NRR expansion, and a CAC payback of 18 months, with results shared with investors during a Series A raise.
