What is consumption-based billing ?

Consumption-based billing charges customers based on the actual amount of a product or service they consume during a billing period.

Consumption-based billing tracks real usage and generates invoices that directly reflect what was consumed. It aligns cost with value and is ideal for infrastructure, APIs, and platforms where usage varies significantly between customers.

Example: A cloud database platform tracks storage used, queries run, and data transferred for each customer. At the end of the month, the billing system calculates the invoice based on actual consumption, with no fixed fee component.
